After the Holocaust in Germany that left over 6 million people, mainly Jews, murdered, people were convinced something like this couldn't ever happen again. Countless charities and awareness programs were created, and since, everybody has liked to think that our world had changed for the better. Unfortunately, that was far from the truth.
In 1992, a new war started in the Yugoslav region that turned into a massacre. One of the main people involved was Slobodan Milosevic, the new Serbian president. His goal was to "free" the Christians in Bosnia. His rise also brought a rise in tensions among different republics, and these tensions led to many countries seceding from Yugoslavia and creating new nations. The "freedom" for some would come at a costly price for the many Bosniaks, Bosnian Muslims, scattered throughout the nation. The Bosnian Serb army closed in around the capital, Sarajevo, and concentration camps were set up. Women and girls were bused to these camps while men and boys of "fighting age" were immediately massacred. Almost no survivors remain, and this event reminds the hopefuls that bad things still happen, and evil still unfortunately exists today.
So, what can we do to prevent these terrible things from happening again? In truth, we may never be able to completely stop them. Education is probably one of the most important ways to stop this, in my opinion. Why? Because hate generally stems from ignorance, we are afraid of the unknown and feel the need to push it away. In reality, people are people no matter their ethnicity or religion.
