Greater Dangers
I feel like researching human trafficking has made me a lot more aware of how real this issue is worldwide. I have heard bits and pieces about it here and there via social media but digging more deeply into this topic has almost forced me to think a little more cautiously in some sense. Although it is very widespread in other countries, trafficking also runs rampant in the United States. I wouldn't say it's making me paranoid but I have been more aware of my surroundings ever since I found out how common human traffickers are here. The whole threat of human trafficking is a very real matter, and I've discovered this by reading extremely detailed and not to mention horrifying personal stories. This project is sort of opening my eyes to greater dangers and for that I'm glad I decided to learn about trafficking.

Your post is interesting to me because apparently in some other schools in our district, parents complained about this topic. Why wouldn't a parent want their child to be knowledgeable and so more aware?
ReplyDeleteI feel like parents nowadays often make the mistake of trying to shelter their kids, which definitely hurts them more than helps them in the long run. I've seen specific examples of that with my own eyes, and it just makes me extremely grateful for how I was raised.
DeleteI also agree that this project has helped me realize what an enormous problem human trafficking is. At first I thought it was something that only really occurred in other countries and was somewhat rare in the US. But after doing my research and reading many stories I have now realized that human trafficking is an international problem and that includes the United States. Looking further into m research I saw that our own state of Missouri has a few hot spots for traffickers like downtown St. Louis and Highway 70. I think that parents may be worried about their children hearing about the sex slavery part of human trafficking, but it is not okay to let them enter the world in a few years being naive and unaware of a dangerous issue. Instead of sheltering their children from "scary" topics, they should let them explore and figure things out for themselves in the safe environment that the school provides for us.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with your view on how adults should let the youth be informed and explore these issues rather than shelter them. Adolescents need to be educated towards topics like this.
