Russian Orphanages
I find this topic extremely interesting. Upon my research, I have found that Russians ultimately view Americans as savage people, only looking to abuse and/or kill their foreign children, and occasionally sell their organs and such for money. 19 Russian children have died among adopted families, and unfortunately Russia has made a HUGE deal about it. When in fact, over 1,000 adopted American children in Russia have died. But nowhere does it say that Russians are forbidden to adopt, because although death has come upon some children, the rest have a family that loves them. America has the sense to realize that happy endings are a chance, and sometimes things don't work out. But they aren't going to put thousands of children's futures on hold to justify the death of a few kids who ultimately have no impact on them. Overall I think Russia is being very immature about the situation, and it has more bad consequences than good ones.

ReplyDeleteI am also researching this topic, and I agree with your opinion that Russia is not handling the situation well. Yes, it is unfortunate that Russian orphans have died after being adopted by Americans, but is it possible that their death could have been involved with the poor treatment they received in the orphanages before they were adopted? Many Russian orphans receive lifelong disabilities because of the neglect they are given while living in orphanages. And suddenly, because 19 out of 60,000 adopted children died in the U.S., we become the bad people in the situation? So yes, I agree that Russia banning American adoption was a bad decision and it should be rethought.

That is also one of my questions, why did those kids die, and did the orphanage environment contribute to their poor health and eventual death? There are SO many different perspectives to look at this situation from.
