You may or may not know that this week Sony was hacked. The hacker stole personal information about all the employees that work there, their job, the amount of money they make, and their ethnicity. That was the hacker's main point in hacking. To show how Sony isn't diverse. Sony isn't diverse? We should riot and boycott their products because they don't hire black people! Wrong. None of that matters. Why? Because Sony as a company is hiring the best employees available to them. If the white guy is better than thee black guy then the white guy is going to be hired, it's simple. This person's out rage and others about this same subject is stupid. Companies hire the best workers they have available to them. So what? The ethnicity of the worker or employee doesn't matter. All that matters is how good of a worker the employee is. It doesn't matter if they're black, white, Asian, Bi-sexual, gay or lesbian. Companies like Apple release a diversity report every year to show how diverse they are, which is a good a bad thing. Why? It's a good thing because it shows that Apple isn't racist and that they're hiring a lot of different people. It's also bad because there come a point where they hire a Russian who is less educated and under prepared for his or her job over the White guy who is prepared for his or her job and can do it well just because he or she is Russian, which is wrong. Companies should hire on the fact of the worker and how well the worker works.
What are your thoughts on this subject in general? I'd like to hear other peoples views on this.
On the subject of hacking, I feel that it needs to be stopped because of how much damage it causes. Also, I completely agree with your stance on diversity in the work place. Obviously employers shouldn't be racist when hiring, but should instead look for the most educated and prepared worker for the position.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, the Sony hacks also got social security information of the workers, which is probably the reason why they hacked, and not to show if they are diverse. But besides that, you brought up a good point. People should be hired based on their skill and ability, not their ethnicity or beliefs. However, people still have basic stereotypes that they associate with different ethnicities. Studies have shown that we subliminally use those stereotypes to make judgements on people. That is the reason why there is less diversity in the workplace. I wish we, as a human race, were at the level of just making judgements based on skill and ability. Unfortunately, we aren't, and that is why we have requirements on hiring diversity. Because of the chance that, even though we may not have known it, we still made a "racist" decision.
ReplyDeleteThe hacker group claimed that they did the hack to show the un-diverse workplace of Sony. It's also been found that the hacker group used Korean lettering and encrypting, causing speculation that they did it from North Korea or are North Korean.
DeleteTalking about hacking in general and not just the Sony hacks (come on Sony, you've been hacked twice (and probably more times) now!) hacking in general is a very difficult topic due to how it can be used for good or for bad things, such as getting personal information. The good things have been shown by groups like Anonymous in the past who hack to expose truth or to lash out against an enemy, such as on a live newscast when Anonymous during an interview ddosed the Westboro Baptist Church's website or when they went to "war" with Scientology due the Chuch attempting to censor bad news and public outcry against themselves, which only backfired against them.
ReplyDeleteSony has been hacked 3 times over the last 5 years! The first would be a hack done to steal personal information from Sony's PSN users, like credit card number and deposits. The guy was incredibly successful stealing an estimated 6.8 million credit and debt card numbers including mine. The hacker was later located in Russia and killed. The second was a hack to reveal information about up and coming movies. The third was the one I mentioned in my original post.
DeleteHoly hell, Sony needs to hire some White-hat hackers and stop using toast with vegemite on it to repel Black-hat hackers, that is insane.
DeleteYeah they really do. A company that makes software and hardware should know how to prevent these hardwares and softwares from getting hacked.
DeleteThe great thing about this is that you aren't sexist or racist. The problem with this is that I don't think optimistic people who hold the same view as you realize that racism and sexism still exist. Although it's true that some white people are chosen over people of color due to skill, skin color or gender also take a part in this decision more often than people believe. That is why diversity reports are so important.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that all races should be considered for a job based off of their skill and qualifications, but unfortunately diversity reports are the best way people have thought up to counteract (what I believe to be is only the minority) of businesses who hire because of the lightness of a person's skin.
