From the Antigone Prompts Today

    I am not confident.
I repeat; I am not confident.
    No one is confident.
    Does no one realize this?
I frequently appear to be confident-- people believe I’m free of insecurities.
    Absolutely not.
For ages upon ages I was drowning in them. Silly things. Things only I would worry about. Mainly not being good enough, but those things started to pass, partially because I realized one of the biggest and saddest things of the human race:
The flaws we hate the most are the ones that bug only us.
Think about it, for just a second. Think about a physical trait you are self conscious of. Maybe it’s the shape of your nose or the way your eyebrows look or the way you talk or the color of your eyes.
Now, I challenge you to look for those things on another person. Spot those imperfections-- now don’t write me off as a nut job yet! Do you want to know why you must do that? You’ll realize that you never saw it on them and that it doesn’t matter. If you never saw it on another, why would someone see it on you?
Think of one of your habits you hate. Maybe you’re disorganized or you tap too much or you bite your nails or you ramble or stutter or trip or have a laugh you hate.
Go into a public place. Sit down in your classroom. Look around at lunch. Don’t talk, just watch and listen.
    Other people do it too.
You had never noticed or cared! You don’t care now, either. It makes them no less of a person. So if you don’t worry about it with others, why should you worry about it with yourself?
We all have “flaws,” but they’re not as big as you would think.

  1. This is such an interesting view point. I read that the only way to be confident was to "Fake it 'til Ya make it". I'm currently still in the "faking it" stage but this post makes me question if anybody ever makes it.

I suppose everyone's little insecurities are overlooked by others. Heck, I hardly notice people's faults. Even if I do, I usually just see them as a thing that makes a person unique.

Oh but I have to ask, which quote made you think of this?
