I think that if u call your a man u shouldn't be feminism but u could still care being feminism is something that only girls should do because i don't know any girls that want to don't boys that act like girls and if u are a boy that is feminism then u must like boys shift_team made this comment but put it on the site as a new post, so I am correcting that.
I think that it's really important to define feminism first. What is it? What does it look like? Isn't it important that men champion women's causes, too? Any comments? I'm not sure I agree with shift_team's comment.
Margins-and-ink is correct when they define feminism as equality among genders. I consider myself to be a feminist and I think that a common misconception about feminism is that feminists believe in female domination and radical behavior rather than just achieving equality. I think this misconception partly sprouted because female empowerment is a common theme of feminism, and this is misinterpreted as misandry. Women's empowerment is essential in giving girls the confidence to have their own ideas and opinions in situations often dominated by men.
Although Warm Vanilla Mocha believes there are too many factors and variables in labeling one's self as a feminist, feminism is simply believing in equality of opportunity and treatment (politically, socially, and economically) for both genders. This is why both men and women can be feminists.
Honestly, these days, sexism has become so ingrained into everyday culture that most people don't even notice it, which is why people often label feminism as being useless or irrelevant in this day and age. However, one example of the way women experience daily inequality is the way they are often sexualized or objectified. This can be seen in ads, movies, t.v. shows, or music videos, and it's hardly questioned. Although men can also be sexualized in the same way, this occurrence is way less common than the former. Another example of social inequality is slut shaming. I do believe there's a necessity for appropriate clothes in a school or workplace, but the clothes people wear when they're walking around their neighborhood are their decision as long as they're dressed in a way that doesn't disturb the public. One way this inequality is shown is when Nick Jonas released pictures of himself only in his underwear; he was praised for his body. However, when any girl's bra straps peek out of their daily clothes, it's considered inappropriate. The media displays this bias perfectly- while Nick Jonas got a positive reaction, Taylor Swift was criticized: http://hollywoodlife.com/2014/06/15/taylor-swift-black-bra-photo/ . The wardrobe malfunction, which showed about an inch or two of her bra in the back, elicited the headline "Taylor Swift Shows of Black Bra in NYC: Adorable or Over the Top?". These are only two examples of the social inequality experienced by women on a daily basis.
I know this is a long comment and I expressed a lot, but I believed clarification was needed on just what exactly feminism was and why it's needed.
I am a feminist because i believe that one day it will not only be man who inhabits earth, or man who got to the moon. Our species will no longer go by the term man. One day we will simply be called humans because no matter what gender, we all have the same potential as the next human.
While yes, I believe both genders should be treated equal, the word Feminist is quite an off put and sometimes used in the wrong way. A long while ago, the man behind MegaMan started developing Mighty No.9 and was struck by someone who didn't want the main protagonist to be a male robot, but instead female. The problem with it all is that it wasn't really trying to make anything equal and became what seems like female superiority kinda thing striking in.
I think the idea of feminism is fantastic. Personally, I consider myself to be an equalist instead of a feminist for a few major reasons. Feminism in today's time has a very negative connotation. Most of the feminists I've had run ins with are the radical feminists that most people would consider "crazy." These are the women who scream "sexism" whenever anyone (male or female) questions them, drink out of the "male tears" mugs, and are extreme misandrists. Being a female myself, I want to be treated with the same respect as a man and these women claim to be trying to aid in achieving that, yet claim that I have been brain washed by the patriarchy whenever I have a differing opinion. I know that not all feminists are like this, but I choose not to associate myself with the modern day feminist movement because these radical feminists give the rest of feminism a bad name.
To an extent, men & women should be treated equal, in my opinion. However, it's a proven fact that women are not always as physically or emotionally strong as men. Women were not made to be as strong or stable as men. I believe in feminism, and that isn't the problem. The issue is all of the women who claim to be a feminist, but still want guys to buy them stuff, pay for their meals, pull out their chairs, hold the door for them, etc. and then not do anything like that to the men to repay them. Not that every feminist is like that, I just think that if you're going to say that you deserve to be treated equally to men, you should give them what they give you. For example, paying for dinner. The man shouldn't have to pay every time you go somewhere, and neither should the woman. There's nothing wrong with splitting it up, or simply paying for your own things. Anyways, feminism is a great idea, but in the reality of it all, most women don't want "equal rights," they just want more equal treatment about certain things when they feel like getting it.
