If someone does something horrible such as with the Sandy Hook shooting( Pretending of course that the shooter is alive and apprehended) Does the shooter deserve to be treated as humanely as someone over seas involved in terrorism and being held in Guantanamo?
Don't get me wrong, I believe those who hurt children are the worst sort of scum this planet has to offer, but the dehumanization at Guantanamo simply isn't right. People are still people, no matter how awful they are, and abusing someone to solve abuse doesn't fix a problem. Harsh punishments, yes, but not the way people are treated down there.
ReplyDeleteI agree with margins-and-ink. The people in Guantanamo are treated more like animals than humans. While they did something very wrong to be there, they are still humans and deserve to be treated as such. I don't think anyone should be treated like those in Guantanamo are. I don't think someone such as the Sandyhook shooter should be allowed to walk free either. They deserve to go to a penitentiary somewhere and do their time.
ReplyDeleteMargins-and-ink and HelplessDreamer both make well-supported, valid points. Makes me wonder.. are you for or against Capital Punishment? Do you believe someone who has violently raped/killed/abused deserves to live?
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm still against it. I hate people like that, but killing a human being solves nothing. There is ALWAYS a better solution. They should be imprisoned for life, no probation, in solitary confinement, but no one should be killed.
DeleteHonestly though, those who are supposed to serve life in prison often don't. It's just too expensive to keep them that long. I don't think killing people is the right thing to do, but it keeps some of these people off the streets. I wish there was a better way to handle these kinds of criminals, but there really isn't.
DeleteI've been studying Guantanamo Bay for the research project and I am honestly disgusted by what is happening. Here is a good source describing a few of the torture methods being used:

Typically, I lean more towards the Conservative side of politics but in this instance I completely disagree with them. The Bush administration justified the torture going on within Guantanamo by saying that because it's in Cuba they don't have to give prisoners the same rights they would have in America. What is your opinion on that and do you feel that Guantanamo should be reformed or just completely shut down? Personally I think Guantanamo should be reformed because we do need to keep the world safe by getting terrorists out of the streets.
