The answer to that question mostly lies in the fact that schools make their lunches where it is as appealing as possible. Therefore, the profit from food would be maximized, however in turn the amount of nutritious foods taking a plummet. In a prison this ideology is not taken into effect so therefore the food in a prison is naturally more nutritious than a school lunch.
This question could actually be turned into a research project--incarceration and crime--recidivism (when a person relapses into crime)--are complicated topics with myriad causes and effects.
Well if you think about it, the inmates don't have the opportunity to pay for their lunches. They don't have a chance to get a job that makes enough money to pay for their lunches. We have the opportunity to get a job and pay for our own lunches. Also, think about how much money the school would lose if we didn't pay for our lunches with the only other source of income is taxes. The prisoners "price" is them being in prison.
how would inmates pay for their lunches? Would that not be inhumane to deny them the right to work for food as well as the right to find work? And as for us getting free lunches at school, schools are barely funded enough as it is, much less capable of spending another $15,000 a week on whatever students buy for lunch. And you can say lunches in prison are better, but bringing your lunch is by far healthier (or it can be healthier). The school is not responsible for your health. Also consider that there are more options at school than you can possibly have at a prison. The school gives you options. The prison does not.
I was just about to say, in response to the question posed, that inmates are forced to be prison, therefore they should not be required to pay for their meals, since they no longer have the ability to work and make money while in prison. But are we also not required to attend school by the government?
I see the point you're making, but our families are generally able to support us while we attend school. Inmates have no source of income. I definitely see where you're coming from, and I wouldn't say that the fact of income completely justifies student payment for lunches vs inmates.
Prisons have work programs that allow them to make money and buy food that are school also sells. Secondly we are required to go to school by the government because if you miss a certain amount of days you get a letter or DFS comes to your house
People in prison don't get a lot of privileges either. I think that allowing them to at least get the satisfaction of keeping nutrients in their body is a good enough allowance for the general public to keep them off the streets.
ultimately, I think they don't have to pay for lunches because they have all other expenses that need to be paid, so I don't think the prisons are very concerned about these "criminals" paying for a few undesirable meals with practically no nutrition. They are concerned about the prisoners paying for their mistakes. Also, few people in prisons have jobs (depending on how high the security is). Even if most people DID have jobs, they only make a small amount of money every week. Not enough to pay for three meals a day, seven days a week.

this is actually a very interesting question, i've never thought about that before
ReplyDeleteThe real question is,why is prison food better/more nutritious than ours?

ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with this. Inmates don't pay for their lunches because they don't have the means, and it would be inhumane otherwise.
